This month we've teamed up to combine out opinions of the latest book in the Hudson series, Lightning Strikes. After some heavy brainstorming on our part, we've come up with the only positive things we could find: --The setting in this book (London) was very interesting. Taking us to places we could only dream about before. --The part about the cottage and Great-Aunt Leonora's daughter really added to the story. --And the last two positive things we could come up with is that Rain's real father, Larry Ward, was very accepting and nice. It nice to finally find a father who is understanding and who wants to be a father in a V.C. Andrews book. --We also agreed that Rain's stepmother was a shining spot in this book, some people would not and could not be as accepting as she was about introducing Rain into their lives. And now the things that we didn't like about this book: --The ghost in Rain's room at Endfield Place. This was annoying, here we were preparing to be scared by this ghost and it never had happened. One lost soul, Heather's, in the book is enough. --Rain, for all her streetsmarts, is extremely naive. She managed to get herself in one situation after another that she didn't want to be in and could have been avoided. All in all, this story really dragged very slowly, it could've been summed up in one or two paragraphs instead of 359 pages. Rain and Roy- a visit back to the Cutler series? I was very happy when this book started out to be different but there at the end, the déjà vu hit again. Then they killed off the one character that was likable (besides Jake, of course): Grandmother Hudson. She, too, was a bright spot in an otherwise dull book. The next two go together: The fight over the inheritance, what is this? After trying to keep Rain's birth a secret for all this time, they decide to take it public just to get more money? Forgive us if we don't understand this part. And the last one: There was just way too much foreshadowing in this book. When Rain says good-bye to Grandmother Hudson, already we know she'll never see her again. As for the thing with Jake in the next book, "Eye of the Storm", they've been hinting about this since "Rain". I could wager one guess about what the secret is and it will probably be right. This secret and the foreshadowing is just too much, it's dragging out the book so far. So, our opinion of this book boils down to one thing: Despite the occasional bright spot, this book wasn't a great one by our favorite ghostwriter. We can only hope that "Eye of the Storm" turns out to be a lot better! ============================== *Society Column* By Daphne Dumas --Fais Dodo in Tarnished Gold-- Like all bayou parties, this one took place in a restaurant that resembled a large bayou shack. Almost everyone in the parish attended, including the legendary Catherine Landry. For her it seemed to be more of a baby-sitting job because she never took her eyes off her daughter. Also, she had a swarm of people around her asking about this sickness and that ailment. If that had been me they were crowding around, I would have swept them aside to enjoy myself. Food for thought: crayfish and beer. Is that all that the Cajuns eat? Every single person there had about thirty pounds of crayfish on their plate. Clothing? I would hardly call that clothing! When people I know go to parties, they dress up, designer gowns, tuxedos. These women and men must have pulled rags out of the garbage and tried to pass them off as their best. I can't say I can give this party a high rating. If they had an orchestra, some formal wear, and some decent food, that would be one thing. But this seemed like an excuse for people to get together and do one thing they are good at: eat crayfish. Till next time, the Reigning Society Queen, Daphne Dumas ============================== *Quotable Quotes* By RavenDoll --Butterfly-- On page 32, Janet has some doubts about her new parents. "I gazed up at him [Sanford Delorice] and wondered what I had done to bring such happiness to two people who only hours ago had been complete strangers. I couldn't help being afraid that they had mistaken me for someone else." "There'll be much more pain to come." Janet, page 71. She doesn't know just how much... On page 93, Dimitri really grosses Janet (and me for that matter) out: "I've always liked to watch young girls develop." "There are no holidays, no days off, no time to forget what is your destiny, Janet." Celine, page 128. Celine can be very demanding. Janet describes her first kiss on page 133: "I didn't move and he leaned toward me slowly. I closed my eyes and there, on the crest of the hill behind my new home, I was kissed for the first time on the lips. It didn't last long. There was even a little friction shock, but I thought it was the most wonderful kiss in the world, better than any I had seen on television or in the movies. The little warm feeling that followed lingered for a moment around my heart and then trickled into my pool of memories where it would stay forever and ever." I think she's making a REALLY big deal out of this. Celine rants on page 138. "This time it's only a night at the movies and ice cream afterward, ice cream full of fat that she doesn't need. Tomorrow it will be a whole weekend day and night. And then she'll be wanting to go on weekend jaunts with girls who have nothing but bubble gum brains and two left feet." God forbid! "I felt like I was floating. My arms had turned into paper-thin wings. I was drifting through the darkness toward a pinhole of light and it felt so wonderful, so easy. I glided and turned, dove and rose, fluttering. Then I passed what looked like a wall of mirrors on both sides ... I looked at myself as I continued toward the light. And amazingly, I was a butterfly." Janet, page 149. The awful truth: "It's been cruel," he corrected, turning to me. "That's what it's been. Your childhood has been disregarded, ignored, sacrificed to satisfy an unrealistic dream. You can never be what Celine wants--you can't give her back her legs, her career, her dream. No one can, even the most talented dancer." Sanford, page 158. Some people can be so cruel... "When they were leaving, my grandmother looked in at me in the living room, turned to Sanford, and said, 'Celine wasted precious energy to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear." Celine's mother, page 162. "For a long moment I just sat there staring at the floor. Finally I went to the window and looked down and saw his car disappear down the road. I started to cry, the first tear exploding in a hot drop to trickle down my cheek, when suddenly a beautiful butterfly landed on the windowsill. It lingered for a moment and then lifted into the wind. I watched it flutter away and I thought, someday, that will be me." Janet, page 170. If that isn't a sign, I don't know what is... ============================== *Olivia's Observations* By Olivia Foxworth --Casteel Series-- Hello everybody! In doing this month's observations, I developed a severe headache while trying to sort through what could only be called a certified age mess. Hope you enjoy what I have finally been able to deduce! ***In "Web of Dreams", page 111, Jillian confides to Leigh that she told Tony that she was only 28-years-old. In "Dark Angel", page 28, Tony tells Heaven that Jillian told him she was thirty when they met. ***In "Web of Dreams", page 48, Tony tells Leigh that he is 23-years-old. But in "Dark Angel", page 26, Tony tells Heaven he was 20-years-old when he married Jillian. ***In "Web of Dreams", page 31, Troy is introduced as being 4-years-old when he meets Leigh. In "Dark Angel", page 191, Troy tells Heaven he was only three. ***In "Heaven", page 6, Granny tells Heaven "He was seventeen an she was only fourteen an three days..." when Leigh came to live with them. In "Web of Dreams", page 407, Leigh tells Granny, "I'm nearly fourteen" when they meet. ***And to end our age mess, the biggest mess of all. In "Web of Dreams", page 394, Leigh thinks "Nearly fourteen years ago, my mother had become pregnant about my age..." There are two Observations for this: #1) Jillian was almost forty when "Web of Dreams" began (I'll give her the benefit of the doubt and say she's 38-years-old, I think she would've liked that.) and Leigh had just turned twelve. So I figure Jillian was around the age of 25 when Leigh was conceived. That's an eleven year time difference. And #2) 13 pages later, on page 407, Leigh tells Granny that she herself is nearly fourteen. So Leigh was conceived over fifteen years ago, not nearly fourteen. ***On with the rest: While I loved the fact that "Web of Dreams" gave us information about Annie and Luke (from "Gates of Paradise"), I just couldn't resist the obvious here. How did "Leigh's Book" make it back to Farthy for this prequel? Heaven had her only suitcase and she never found it but there it is, sitting in a drawer at Farthy, waiting for us. ***In "Web of Dreams", page 6, Leigh remembers her keepsakes: "...tickets from the circus when it came to Boston last year..." And then on page 377, Luke asks her is she had ever been to a circus before and she recalls this: "I had been to one in Europe when I was very little..." ***In "Web of Dreams", page 207, Tony Tatterton takes Leigh to Winterhaven to enroll her in school. In "Dark Angel", page 90, Miss Mallory recalls that she met Leigh only once when "...Mr. VanVoreen brought her here and enrolled her." ***In "Fallen Hearts", page 343, Heaven recalls that Fanny and Randall had been married "two weeks ago." Then on page 363, Fanny testifies that "Randall and I got hitched two days ago." ***In "Web of Dreams", page 373, Like introduces himself to Leigh as Thomas Luke Casteel. In "Fallen Hearts", page 403, Fanny names her son after her father, Luke. Then in "Gates of Paradise", page 48, Annie calls him "Luke Toby, Jr." There are two mistakes here also: #1) Luke is not a Junior because that wasn't his grandfather's given name And #2) He can't be a "Junior" to anyone but Logan, his real father. ***In "Gates of Paradise", page 249, Annie calls Drake "Drake Ormand Casteel". But in "Dark Angel", page 274, Tom tells Heaven that he was allowed to name Drake: "Well, we got us Walter Drake. We call him Drake." Hope ya'll enjoyed this! See ya next time....Olivia ============================== *Feature Character* By Clara Sue Cutler --Cary Logan-- Cary Logan was born with a twin sister, bible fearing father and an obedient mother. He lived a happy child hood and loved his twin sister. Soon enough their family had another edition, a little sister, May, who was born deaf. To communicate with his little sister, he, his twin sister, Laura, and their mother all learned sign language. As soon as Cary was old enough, his father put him to work helping him with their boats and cranberry bogs. But Cary loved working outside; he hated being stuck inside and would skip school whenever possible. Cary and his twin sister became inseparable. Where ever the one was, you could find the other. This continued into high school where they were teased for being so close. Then one day, Laura fell in love with Robert Royce. Though he was a nice guy, Cary was jealous of all the attention Laura was giving to him. He would spy on them from the attic. While he was up putting together his little boats, he would peak through a hole in the floor into Laura's room. Soon Laura spent all her time with Robert and Cary hated it. One day Laura and Robert were going to go sailing. Cary knew there was going to be a storm but he let them go in his boat. He soon regretted it as the storm came in. He knew that neither Robert nor Laura could navigate in a storm like the one that was going on. He decided he had to go get them but when he went out they were nowhere to be seen. All Cary found was a scarf of Laura's, which he kept, and he knew they were gone. The whole family grieved heavily for the loss of Laura but no one did more than Cary. He was up in the attic more than ever and keeping to himself. He had lost his best friend. Then one day Melody, who was Cary's cousin, came to stay with his family. He saw she was very pretty but he wanted to be a hermit and not let her get close to him, fearing she would hurt him too. She moved into Laura's room and used Laura's things. Cary was hurt at first but soon he started to like Melody. She was nice and went out of her way to fit in, she even wanted to learn sign language so she could communicate with May. Of course she had to meet their grandparents. Their grandmother was a hard woman and was very demanding. She hardly talked to the them and after their lunch they were excused to go outside and "play". Cary decided to take Melody down to the basement where he and Laura used to go. It was filled with old pictures, and Melody found one of her mother standing with Cary's father and her own father, who was Cary's father's brother. Neither of them understood what that meant. One night Cary followed Melody out onto the beach where she was meeting Adam Jackson. Adam got melody drunk and was going to rape her but Cary saved her by punching Adam and getting him away. He then took care of Melody, taking her to the boat so she could clean up and sleep off some of the alcohol. He knew he was falling in love with her but he didn't know if she felt it too. At school Adam was spreading rumors about himself and melody, when Cary heard about them he blew up and got into a fight with Adam. The consequences were that he had been suspended. Melody was a little sad that Cary would be stuck at home so close to finals but he was happy and he still got up every morning to walk with Melody and May. Soon afterwards he felt that Melody could come up into the attic and share it with him. He showed her the model boats he was making, and told her his wishes of making real boats. Melody had been thinking about it for a while and decided to confront their grandmother, Olivia, to find out her mother and father's history. What she found out shocked her, she wasn't really related to the Logans at all! Cary wasn't even her first cousin. She decided to go back to the only home she ever knew. After she ran away, Cary also confronted their grandmother and found everything out. She sent Cary to get Melody and bring her back, which he did. Now Melody was on the hunt for her real father, and Cary wanted to help her. Olivia had mentioned something about Kenneth Childs and Cary told her it had been rumored around. So melody was going to find out for herself. After a chance encounter with Kenneth at his house/studio, he came to her house and asked her to work with him during the summer. She decided she would and Cary would see her less and less, but he knew it was something Melody wanted to do and he had to work with his father. Melody had been working with Kenneth for quite awhile when his girlfriend, Holly, came for a visit. Holly was into astrology and all the stuff that goes with it. She taught Melody how to meditate and she decided to show Cary. When they were just getting into the zone of it, Jacob walked in and wanted to know what was going on in his house! When Jacob practically called Melody the devil, Cary told his dad to stop, only to receive a slap in the face! Embarrassed and hurt he ran outside into a storm and away from them all. Melody followed him to the boat. After talking and drying off, passion took a hold of them and they made love for the first time. Afterwards Cary pledged his love to Melody, but she didn't really say much. he knew he loved her more than she ever would love him. The next day they were having lunch at Olivia's but Melody got out of it and stayed at home. When they came back Jacob wasn't with them, he had had a heart attack and was at the hospital already. They got Melody and went straight there. Cary was devastated, his father could die. But after an almost death experience he came through it. Helping his father even more, Cary did his father's job himself and had very good days at sea which made Jacob very proud of him but also made Jacob bitter that he couldn't be out helping. After Melody found out some more truths about herself she contemplated moving in with Olivia and soon she received a letter with a picture of a woman who looked exactly like her mother, who she had thought was dead. she decided to go find this woman and to do so she had to go to California. Cary was devastated she was leaving again, but he knew it was something she had to do. But Melody came back after a horrifying experience. It *had* been her mother and her boyfriend Archie. Archie had tried to make Melody become a porno movie star! She escaped and when her mother didn't stick up for her she knew she had no place in their lives and came back to the only family she had now. After Melody had been back for a while, living with Olivia, she found out that Laura had not died in the boat accident but she had been put in a mental institution! When they went to get her out it was already to late. She had drowned only a couple months before! Cary had lost his twin sister again and he also had lost his father. The only stable thing Cary had was Melody. After Olivia died, Melody moved back in with Cary, May and their mother. Kenneth knew of Cary's dreams of building boats and he helped him start up a company. Soon after, Melody graduated her and Cary set a date to be married. ============================== *Dear Diary* By Stacie Casteel --Catherine's (Pearls' friend) views on Pearl-- Dear Diary, This was supposed to have been one of the best nights of my life, and it could have been, if only Pearl would let her hair down and celebrate just a little bit. I mean, we graduated today, its our time to howl. But Pearl wanted to hang out with her parents. Come on. Hanging out with your parents is all very well and good if you have nothing better to do, but I had invited her with my other friends to the most rockin' party ever. And she decided to stay at home. So now she has lost out on having what could have been one of the best nights ever. You know, I thought I had almost convinced her. She went to talk to her mother, but before I could speak to her again, Claude cut in and they had some sort of argument. We all knew what was happening but none of us wanted to butt in. It ended up with Pearl giving Claude back his class ring and Claude getting together with Diane Ratner...ugh. She is such a step down from Pearl, even if she is more fun. And then, when I asked Pearl what she was doing, she got mad that I hadn't done more to protect her speech. I suppose she was right about that, because I do feel a bit guilty. I know that if someone said something or did something against me, Pearl would have stuck up for me in an instant, but I guess I'm just not as strong as her. But as I told her, I knew that she would be okay. I knew that she would have the whole thing practically memorized even though it was a long speech. So we went to this fantastic party. Claude ended up in the main bedroom with Diane, I don't think I need to elaborate on THAT any more! We all drank a lot, smoked a lot and just generally enjoyed ourselves. You are only young once. I forget who said that but it makes a lot of sense, well to me anyway. I felt a bit sad that Pearl wasn't there, even though we are so very different, she is an important part of my life and with me going away this summer, I won't get to see her very much at all. In all honesty, she would have brought the tone of the evening down. People would have taken one look at her serious face and instantly gotten sober. But here I am, completely bagging Pearl when I really do love her. She just needs to loosen up a little and have fun. When she does let go, even a little, she does enjoy herself. You can see it. And then in the same instant you can practically see her feelings of guilt for having fun. I'll never understand that girl. But maybe that is why our friendship stays so fresh when I get bored with everyone else. I need to get some more sleep. I still feel hung over. Catherine Didion ============================== Battle of the Sexes By Stand In Writer ***This section is available. Email shayruby@yahoo.com to fill out an application.*** -Cutler- The Cutler series, though outlined by VC herself, was written by her ghostwriter, Andrew Neiderman. In this series alone, Neiderman set what we now call the "Pattern Theory." Pattern Theory- Book One: Heroine is poor. She finds her real family, has wealth but no love. Book Two: Heroine is now a part of this new family. She is sent away to school and finds her true talent. Heroine meets someone, gets pregnant, and loses that special man in her life. Book Three: The birth of heroine's child. The struggles of her new responsibilities and adult life. Book Four: The heroine's daughter's story and her struggles to understand her family's skeletons in their closet. Book Five: The Prequel. The story of our heroine's grandmother and how she became the way she was, her trials and tribulations. Although Neiderman has since made many alterations to the pattern in his newer books, it shines the brightest in this series. I believe he did so because he was just getting the feel for writing as VC. He wasn't VC, most certainly, but he had to make an attempt and by setting a pattern for himself, he knew he couldn't stray. Now, years later, he is comfortable as "being" VC and doesn't have to stick to the plan. ============================== *Theory Corner* By Luke Sr --Dollanganger-- Have you ever really wondered about the parallels in the life of the Dolls? Today we are going to look at the lives of the Chrises. You know the ones we are talking about - Chris Sr and Chris Jr. Christopher Garland Sr was born into a loving family who adored him and were thankful they had the chance to raise him. He was a double of his father, Garland Christopher, in name and in looks. Chris' life began like a fairy tale. He lived in a wonderful home and didn't want for anything. His life took a tragic turn at a very young age, when his father died. Under the circumstances, Chris Sr was taken away from his mother and raised by relatives for around a year's time. Moving ahead, Christopher Jr was born in the same way. He had loving parents who thought the world of him, and were pleased they had a happy, healthy, beautiful son. He was a double of his father in name, face, and disposition. He was never spoiled, except in the amount of love he received. While he spent more time in a problem-free world than his father, he did have tragedy turn to his corner, when his father died. He was now left with his mother and siblings. Too soon after that did Chris Jr. parallel his father in that he was sent to live with relatives, seeing his mother all too (opposite of often LOL, little?). When they did see their mothers, Alicia and Corrine respectively, they were happy to be with them, but the mothers of these boys had changed in ways the children couldn't understand. That is when their paths differ slightly. Chris Sr had his mother throughout her life. She remarried, and he now had a step-father whom he could respect. He lived modestly and did well in school. When his mother died, he was sent to live with relatives who were uncaring. All but Corrine, the girl he believed only to be his half-niece. Chris Jr had his mother only for a little while, and while he didn't lose her physically, he lost her caring, kind motherly ways. She remarried, and this was a man who he could have respected, at least he respected the little he knew about him. Chris Jr was always blinded by the father he had had before. He admired his father much in the way that Chris Sr had admired his. Both step-fathers would be second best, no matter how much they loved their sons. Later in life they both found someone to send them to college. They were exceptionally good students and were praised by many. They ended up marrying girls that looked like their mothers. They both married their sisters. Even though Chris Sr did not know this, it still shows a commanding parallel in the lives of the father and son. A coincidence that is not lost on many people, this may be the happiest part of their told lives. At the end of their lives, they were taken away quickly from the people that loved them. In this case, they were both hit by a car that was driving too recklessly down the road. In perhaps the most poignant moment in the books, their personal items were laid down on the table in front of their loved ones, bringing home the reality that they were, indeed, gone. The Chrises were both number one in their wives hearts, and remained so even after they were gone. This is the parallel of their lives. Was it coincidental? Or did they want to be so much like the men that raised them they pushed themselves into a world that they could not control? Maybe it doesn't matter, but the characters here were so well shaped and had so much to live for, it is a shame that we couldn't all meet them in someone, somewhere here in our lives. -- If you have any questions or theory ideas you would like to hear us talk about, just e-mail reie@llano.net (Luke Sr) or lukecasteeljr@yahoo.com (Luke Jr) with them! Email shayruby@yahoo.com to fill out an application.*** -Vera, the Evil Adare- Court is in session. Presiding is the honorable Judge Battle. ::Gavel Knocks:: Charges: Murder in the first degree/Attempted Murder Opening Statement: The State opens with the facts. Several deaths occurred in the Whitefern home over a period of time. Facts have been brought to light that would prosecute Vera Adare as the murderess. Fact #1: The first death that occurred was that of one, Ellsbeth Whitefern, mother of the accused. Death occurred as a result of being pushed down the stairs of the home. Ms. Audrina Adare noted to police that she had heard a door open and close after she heard the thud. When she arrived at the crime scene, the sound was gone and Ellsbeth was dead. Fact #2: The second death that occurred also happened at Whitefern and also happened as a result of falling down the same stairs. Deceased Billie Lowe, parapeligic, had fallen and broken her neck as a result. Audrina Adare, now Mrs. Lowe's daughter-in-law, noted later to police that she had again heard the same sounds. Fact #3: Audrina Adare Lowe was knocked unconscious by a blow to the back of her head and was in a coma for months. Vera Adare, half-sister to Audrina, was at the time managing to utilize her nursing degree as Audrina's live-in nurse. Mrs. Adare Lowe noted afterwards that she was in a coma yet she could hear everything happening around her. Her doctors have proved that this is possible in cases of coma patients. Audrina noted to police in a statement that Vera plotted her death so she could have the Adare/Whitefern fortune and Audrina's husband, Arden Lowe. Vera Adare was Arden's mistress. Defendant's Case: Vera Adare, daughter of Ellsbeth Whitefern and Damian Adare, suffered traumatic events as a child. The inability to be the "good" daughter to her father, whom did not own up to his parenthood to her, made Vera bitter towards Audrina. She saw Audrina do the right things, be the good daughter, receive attention, and win the affections of the man she loved. Psychologist, Dr. Adam Marten, has filed a statement on Vera's guilty plea under the case of temporary insanity. Does Vera have a case? YOU decide! Email shayruby@yahoo.com with your verdict and why. Verdict will be posted in the October issue. ============================== *Ask Doctor Dumas* VC Fan, Jamie, asks: "When is the new Hudson book due out? I am dying to read it!" Jamie, I am, too!
