Copyright and Legal --------------------------------- BATTLE OF THE SEXES By LadyHeaven VCA and The Counterculture In his quest to be different from his predecessor, Neiderman tends to add new elements to the books that can be very interesting to the reader. I mentioned in a previous article that the Landry series involved Creole and Cajun magic. In the Logan series, he gives us a taste of the Sixties counterculture. I'm not sure whether this is when Logan series takes place, but it certainly sounds like it. He introduces us to the counterculture through Kenneth's girlfriend, Holly Brooks, who does not hide the fact that she is a New Ager, as we would call them today. Arriving in Provincetown in her decorated car, Holly brings with her an assortment of mood stones, incense sticks, saris, astrology charts and meditation techniques and introduces them to Melody, who is a conservative and at first finds these things rather strange. Once she starts listening to Holly's ideas with an open mind, she learns to do the things Holly does and even tries to get Cary, also a conservative and from a strict religious background to try them. Cary, unfortunately, is not as accepting of new ideas as Melody is. And his father, Jacob, is even less accepting of new ideas. When he catches Melody and Cary practicing mediation and burning incense sticks, he accuses them of participating in pagan rituals and calls Melody the devil's daughter. Still this does not prevent Melody from associating with Holly or stop learning new things about the counterculture. All in all I found new twist to the VCA stories rather interesting because it dares to introduce a way of life that many people may not agree with, but probably would learn to like if they kept an open mind about it. --------------------------------- COMING ATTRACTIONS By Cary Logan The third of the Shooting Stars has streaked across our sky, er, I mean, into our bookstores. The brilliant red copies of Rose are waiting for your hands to be gripped onto and read. Honey, the fourth of the Shooting Stars, will arrive in beginning of October. Falling Stars, the final full-length novel, will unite the four Shooting Stars as they shoot up into the stardom. The hardcover edition of Orphans is released. The hardcover of Wildflowers came out at the same time the paperbacks were released earlier this summer. These omnibus books are to replace those "minibooks." Butterfly, Crystal, and Raven are labeled as Out of Print now. Brooke will be next. I've been gathering a bunch bits of information about upcoming series. So far I've gleaned that the publishing company is in discussion with Amazon.Com about releasing the e-book format of the prequel before the release of Willow in February 2002. Willow is the first of the saga about the young adopted woman and her journey to Palm Beach, Florida, where she looks for her mother and discovers family secrets. The novel of Willow has 528 pages. Wicked Forest is the second novel in the series with the releasing date as of June 2002. Griffin Group is in discussion with production team at CBS to produce and air the miniseries based on first two Hudson series novels, Rain and Lightning Strikes. I am waiting to hear from the group to see if they receive a green-light signal to make the miniseries. --------------------------------- DEAR DIARY By Stacie Casteel *Jory Marquet* Dear Diary, Something very strange is going on in our house. Mom and Dad know what it is, and I think that even Bart knows. Everyone but me. Makes me wonder. My Grandmother arrived yesterday and no one even seems interested that she is here except for me. Bart never liked her, and she never liked him. He wouldn't try to dance, so he successfully alienated himself from her forever. She's still love me even if I didn't dance, I'm sure of that. But that I do dance just makes sure that we have something in common. Sometimes I think she can read my mind. I wish I could read hers. She knows that is going on in our house too. Or at least, she knows more than I do. When she arrived, we had a good old chat and she made me feel very loved, not that I don't without her around, but you know what I mean. We went into Mom's room where she is writing her book and Grandmother kept asking questions that made no sense. Asking if Mom's brother still lived with us, but even stranger, Mom said yes! Even I know that Cory died years and years ago. He's buried right next to my Aunt Carrie who I vaguely remember. But stranger questions keep getting asked. Grandmother doesn't know the whole story, she keeps asking me and I keep asking her, but neither of us want the other to find out what is eluding the story before the other does. As much as I hate to do this, I think that eavesdropping may be the only way. I keep getting smeary images of half memories that don't make sense, things that have been locked away in a vault for fourteen years. I am finding the whole thing quite disturbing and as much as I do love her, I am beginning to wish that Grandmother never came to see us. She is on the verge of opening Pandora's box and I don't want to know. I don't want to know! Jory Marquet --------------------------------- EXCUSES, EXCUSES By Tom Casteel *Beni Arnold* Beni has been charged with reckless endangerment, indecent behavior, and actions unbecoming a young woman. First she was doubtful of her mothers love. Second she disregarded her mother's and sister's warnings and went to Oh Henry's, a hip-hop joint, to see Carlton. That action caused Rain, her sister, to accompany her there. Jared, a reputed gang leader, spots Rain looking uncomfortable standing near the door and sensed the opportunity. While Beni was talking to Carlton and having a good time, Rain was scared to death surrounded by gang members. Who knew what thoughts were going through Jared's mind, but it was enough to frighten Rain and Roy. After that incident Roy decided to trail behind the two of them while they walked home from school. That caused Roy time away from his job. She never stopped to think about the consequences, all she thought about was herself. Third, again while only thinking about herself, she got into another situation, only this time it was far more serious. This time it involved her own well-being and that of her sister, Rain. As the scene began to unfold, here are the relevant details: Beni Arnold told her mother she was going to her friend, Alicia's, to spend the night and there would be no boys. But she lied. There was a party going on and all she cared about was seeing Carlton. "When you start lying to your own, you're losing the battle with the devil. Just remember that and carry it with you whenever those other girls try to get you to do something you know I wouldn't want you to do." Even when her Mama warned her about lying and sneaking around she still went to Alicia's. She even made her sister Rain cover it up for her. Then she got into trouble, big trouble, and she turned to Rain for help. Her pleas fell on Rain's shoulders: "Oh, Rain they put something in my drink. I woke up a little while ago in a bed and I was naked. I had to crawl on the floor to find my clothes. I couldn't find everything. They stole my panties. Someone’s got my panties!" "When I woke up I saw an empty film container on the floor. Maybe they took pictures of me. I’m so ashamed." Then her so called friends blackmailed her for two-hundred and fifty dollars for the negatives and again she turned to Rain. Rain offered her Christmas money and her most prized possession, her diamond chipped gold bracelet. Then when there still wasn't enough she gave up her gold cross. One evening they went to the warehouse to meet Carlton and his gang expecting a trade. Instead Jared was there, he hassled them and scared them. Beni offered the money and instead of taking it he wanted to see if the girl in the pictures were really Beni. Scared and confused Beni lunged at him and was nearly choked. That action cost Beni her life, a high price to pay... "If Beni could see the way Mama reacted to her death, she would never have had any doubts about Mama’s deep love for her." Since Beni was so selfish and only cared about herself she never really was concerned how her actions affected the people who loved her. I find Beni guilty of all the above charges. --------------------------------- FEATURE BOOK By Cary Logan *Dark Angel* After she has gleaned the truth about her dead mother who ran away from Boston, her grandmother and step-grandfather, Jillian and Tony Tatterton, welcomed Heaven to Boston. She would finally find the happiness she longed for. In Farthinggale Manor, her new home, Heaven dreamed of a wonderful new life of new friends, the best schools, beautiful and clean clothes, and most important of all, family love. Soon she would find her Casteel brothers and sisters and undo her father's unforgiving scheme. But when she came and claimed her mother's suite, these were strange foreboding, secrets best forgotten. She discovered her grandmother's strange obsession about her youth and age. She caught her step-grandfather grazing her that led her to suspect the reason why her mother had ran away from the beautiful and charming manor. And there was a mysterious young man lurking around like a ghost, armed with a secret Heaven must know. --------------------------------- NOTABLE DATES By Ruby Dumas *September* Troy Tatterton celebrates birthday on September 9 Audrina Adare also has a birthday September 9 Sylvia Adare also has a birthday September 9 September 9th is the anniversary of the death of Lucietta Whitefern Adare (Hmmm... September 9th seems awfully popular, doesn't it?) --------------------------------- THEORY CORNER By Luke Casteel Sr. *Adare* Throughout the book My Sweet Audrina, the reader is led to believe that there are two girls: the older, beautiful sister & the young, less spectacular sister. Until the mostly final revelation that they are, in fact the same girl, we are thinking of them as two separate people: mind, background & stories. But as V.C. Andrews books go, that was far too simple. In the end we learn that Audrina Adare was, for all practical purposes, one single girl. She was always in body, name, features & mind, the same. What I am getting at is that because this information comes so near the end, we mostly see Audrina as the one ending product. We see a single Audrina who experienced an event that changed her way of thinking. Yet, I think we should actually see Audrina as two. The reason is simple. Sometimes when a traumatic event happens a person loses some memory, never to get it back. Realize that Audrina never did remember anything sufficient about her rape, only what everyone had told her and flashes from older stories. I think Audrina really did lose the part of her memory that housed the older Audrina, and that makes her two people. Sure she can have the same DNA, but what happens when the mind completely breaks off a former self? We should probably think of both Audrinas as separate people, who shared one event but the first died because of it, and the other went on with her life, to make it worth living in the end. --Luke Sr. --------------------------------- QUOTABLE QUOTES By Stand In Writer *Garden of Shadows, Part Two* "That room belonged to my mother." --Malcolm (Beware!) "I can hardly think of someone so much younger than myself as my mother." --Malcolm (But her sure can have her in his bed, eh?) It wouldn't be long before the opportunity came and the demons would bring with them more misery than I had ever imagined could live in the cold, empty rooms of Foxworth Hall. (Oh and it's only just begun, Olivia darling...) "No! No! No! It can't be. We just celebrated our son's birthday! Please, no. Please. Garland, wake up! Show them you're not dead! Garland! Garland!" --Alicia (Poor distraught Alicia...) "You knew. you always knew. You expected it. I saw it in your face, but I was afraid to say anything to you." --Alicia (Alicia had such heavy burdens to bear.) I did not cherish the role, but Malcolm had cast me in it and I knew the only way to defeat him was to perform it far better than he ever could have expected. He would live to regret this night, I thought, to regret what he had done to me and what he would make me do to her. (...and to her grandchildren) "Last night Garland said, he said...Alicia, don't ask me for the moon or I will go mad trying to get it for you. Should I ask him for the moon, Olivia?" --Alicia (Ask for freedom, Alicia! Ask for freedom!) "Corinne, my sweet beautiful daughter, Corinne!" --Malcolm (And the saga begins....) I didn't stop her from sneaking in; I didn't prevent her from using some of Alicia's and some of Malcolm's mother's things. In my heart I worried that it was not the ghost of Alicia or Corinne that inhabited that room -- it seemed to be the devil himself, come to corrupt any innocent young girl who lived there. "Our beloved Mal has gone to a better place. His true Father has called him in the bloom of youth, to his breast, and there this innocent soul shall rest in peace eternally. his Father has truly claimed him." --John Amos Jackson (The loss of Mal, the first real tragedy to take place.) The sky was a pale gray and the air had turned rather cool for a March day. It was a day without promise of sun, a mirror of my life. (The second tragedy strikes: The 'death' of Joel) "Incestuous! Sinful! Ungodly! Unholy! You have betrayed me, betrayed me!" --Malcolm to Corrine & Christopher (Poor dears had no inkling of their true blood relationship... aka The Fall of Malcolm) Before me were four beautiful children. The boy, almost a man, was an exact replica of Christopher, the same blond hair, the same blue eyes, the same sweet, intelligent expression on his face. Oh, how I longed to embrace him. But I held back, reminding myself of all I knew, of all that had transpired. (...And the real story now begins.) --------------------------------- OLIVIA'S OBSERVATIONS By Stand-In Writer, ShayRuby *Landry Spoilers* In Pearl in the Mist, Paul is talking about Mrs. Livaudis and Mrs.Thibodeau but on page 222 he calls them Mrs. Livaudais and Mrs. Thirbodeaux. In all the other books in the series the names are spelled the first way. On page 4, in "All that Glitters" Ruby says that Pearl has the same eye color as herself and Paul. Which is blue. But on page 9 of "Hidden Jewel" Pearl says her mother has emerald green eyes. In "Hidden Jewel," Pearl asks Jack Clovis to call her Ruby. In Hidden Jewel, Pearl is talking about Louis Turnbull but calls him Louis Clairborne which is his grandmother's last name. In "Tarnished Gold." Gabriel is 17 and is still 17 when she was raped by Octavious. On page 174, it states that Paul is 3 years old and then on page 177 is Gabriel's 19th birthday - if Paul is 3 then Gabriel has to be at least 20 if not 21 after being pregnant for 9 months. I noticed as I was reading the Landry series that Grandmere Catherine said that after the birth of Paul, Gabrielle stopped caring about everything including school... but in Tarnished Gold the very first thing you read about is Gabrielle's high school graduation....... with her as VALEDICTORIAN...... Gabriel Landry is spelled in "Tarnished Gold": Gabriel. In "Ruby," it is spelled Gabrielle. ( All Observations listed here are from ShayRuby's website: http://www.geocities.com/shayruby/ ) --------------------------------- FEATURE CHARACTER By Annie Stonewall *Rose* A rose by any other name would smell as sweet. Not, so with our newest heroine, Rose Wallace. Rose thought she knew her father very well: a roamer, an easygoing, laid back, worry-less man who was devoted to his family though he could not hold down a job for very long. It wasn't until his death that the secret world he lived began to unravel before her very eyes. No doubt a strong-willed character, Rose is lifted into a whirlwind of a new life before the blink of an eye. Taken from her tiny minuscule home to a lavish Georgia Mansion, she can't help but want to stop and take a deep breath before finding out what secrets it and its inhabitants held. With love and talent on her side, and the surprise of a half-brother she comes to adore, Rose achieves happiness despite the shadows lurking in every corner. --------------------------------- SOCIETY COLUMN By Daphne Dumas *Marriage of Ariel and Jeffrey Foster* We entered the sparkling chapel in groups. I seated myself on the groom's side and watched the wedding begin. The strangest thing happened before the ceremony even began (and I bit my lip very hard to contain my laughter). I was stunned at the way the groom's daughter and her friends came dressed. My oh my what a spectacle! It seemed, upon their entrance, that the entire congregation stopped to gasp and murmur. Now, I did not get close enough to find out these Wedding Belles' names but I can give you lavish details. I swear it looked like they stepped right out of a costume store! What an embarrassment! The daughter, Misty Foster, was dressed in a crinkled silk tunic with a V-neck and a crinkled silk shirt in teal. On her head (how sickening) was a sequin laden headband! These girls need some fashion emergency tips! Misty's robust friend with the mousiest brown hair I have ever seen in my life (remind me to give her the number to my stylist) wore a pale lavender fairy dress of silk chiffon with a handkerchief skirt and separate top that tied at the shoulders. Her costume jewelry was obviously fake but the stunning, large, ruby colored glass necklace on a thick silver chain was very posh despite her outfit. Her lovely friend with the coffee colored skin tone wore what appeared to be a Goddess dress made of the same crinkled silk as the groom's daughter with a gold metallic cord-belt. Her ostentatious costume jewelry was just too much! She looked like a circus clown! Last but not least was the getup on the auburn haired beauty, and beauty she was with her sparkling emerald eyes. Her dress was a lovely gown of stretch velvet. It had gold trim and pointed sleeves that were just to die for but one would never be caught dead on the streets of New Orleans in THAT garment. But the worst part (or should I say the tackiest) was the magic "sorceress" wand in the female's hands. How atrocious! Despite their shocking appearances, the ceremony began as usual. Nothing particularly struck my fancy but I must ay Ariel's chose of wedding gown was breathtaking. What innocence those with youth have...Poor girl, she will learn the hard way, won't she? Eyeing the foursome afterwards I watched as they darted off into a limousine and disappeared. They never did arrive at the reception but well, they didn't miss anything. It seemed the catering was done by Ronald McDonald! For my sanity, I left early. Remind me never to leave our Creole Bluebloods again! --------------------------------- OBITUARIES By John Amos Jackson *Jimmy & Dawn Longchamp* James Gary Longchamp, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, died of extensive burns and fume inhalation in the fire at the exclusive beach resort, Cutler's Cove, which was owned by his wife, Dawn. Mr. Longchamp is survived by his children, Christie and Jefferson. He is also survived by his father, Ormand, and siblings, Fern and Gavin. Dawn Cutler Longchamp, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, died of extensive burns and fume inhalation in her hotel Cutler's Cove. Mrs. Longchamp is survived by her mother, Laura Sue Alcott, her children, Christie and Jefferson, and her brother, Philip Cutler. She was loved so by many. A brilliant singer, Dawn was known to been seen singing in the hotel lounge for her guests. "Somewhere over the rainbow..." She will be sorely missed. --------------------------------- HEAVENLY REVIEWS By Troy Tatterton (Pros) and Tony Tatterton (Cons) *The End of the Rainbow* PROS The End of the Rainbow was not my favorite of this series however it did have its good points. The rape of Summer by Duncan took me extremely by shock. I don't think I have ever gasped so loud in my life from just reading a book but the worst was Harley's situation. Poor Harley. So lost without knowing his true parentage. I loved the addition of voodoo into this series and though I knew they would be rescued, I was simply biting my lip awaiting it to happen. It seemed to grasp my attention completely. CONS This book was such a carbon copy of the Cutler series that I could barely stand to read it. Mind you I am a huge fan of V.C. Andrews but this book could not hold my attention. Summer and Harley's relationship? Predictable! Harley seeks his father? Predictable! Trouble awaits Summer and Harley? Predictable! They were rescued! Predictable! I am sorry but I gave this book two thumbs down. --------------------------------- EDITOR'S NOTE What a hideous tragedy has struck our American citizens.
